Tanzania yatimiza umri wa miaka 48

Tanzania leo inatimiza miaka 48 ya uhuru. Miaka hii ni mingi na ukilinganisha na umri wa mtu, basi miaka hii ni umri wa mtu mzima. Lakini ukiangalia katika upande wa maendeleo bado tuko kwenye umri wa chini ya miaka mitano,

Tuliambiwa kuwa ili tuendelee tunahitaji watu, ardhi, siasa safi na uongozi bora.
Watu tunao takribani millioni 37, huu ni mtaji mkubwa sana. Tanzania ina ukubwa wa sqm 1 millioni na sehemu kubwa ya ardhi hii ina rutuba nzuri kwa mahitaji ya mazao ya kila aina.

Tatizo limekuwa kwenye siasa safi na uongozi bora. Ingawa haijatamkwa rasmi, tumeachana na siasa ya Ujamaa na Kujitegemea na kukumbatia Ubepari. Kwa bahati mbaya sana mfumo wa sasa unawanufaisha wanasiasa wachache na wageni huku wananchi wakiendelea kuwa maskini zaidi.

Baadhi ya viongozi wetu hawazingatii tena maadili ya uongozi na watatumia nafasi zao Serikalini na kwenye vyama vya siasa kujikimu na kutimiza malengo yao binafsi.

Maendeleo ya sasa hayaendani kabisa na rasilmali tulizonazo. Mtanzania wa kawaida amezidi kuwa maskini. Huduma za jamii (shule na mahospitali) hazitoshelezi mahitaji ya sasa. Vile vile hakuna mabadiliko makubwa ya miundombinu kama huduma ya maji, umeme, barabara na reli tangu tupate uhuru.

Hapa ndio tulipo miaka 48 tangu Uhuru. Yafaa tutafakari wapi tumekosea na kujirekebisha. Tusiangalie mahitaji yetu ya sasa bali ya vizazi vijavyo na tunataka kuwarithisha nini.

Who is heading our delegation to Copenhagen?

Tanzania will send the second largest contigency to the Climate change summit due to take place in Copenhagen, Denmark from 7-18 December 2009. The actual of delegates from Tanzania is unknown but it is estimated to be almost 100 people. It is reported that China with a population of 1.6 billion people will send only 35 people.

The question that still remains is, who will lead the Tanzanian delegation there?
Many world leaders including the US President are expecting to attend the Copenhagen meeting.
Our president Jakaya Kikwete has just returned to the country after an extended trip to Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago and Cuba and he has also agreed to be the guest of honour during the Independence celebrations which are due to take place on 9 December.
The Prime Minister Mizengo Pinda is due to travel to Vienna, Austria to attend the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) meeting due to start on 7 December.
That leaves the Vice-President Dr Ali Mohamed Shein as the only high ranking official avaialable to travel. Again, the environment issues fall under his department.

Of late, we have been seeing more and more of President's engagements being given to the Prime Minister rather than his deputy.

Will Shein go to Copenhagen or the President will opt to go there himself after the Independence celebrations? Time will tell.

A man infects his wife with HIV tainted syringe

An HIV-positive New Zealand man pricked his sleeping wife with a needle tainted with his blood, infecting her with the virus, court papers have revealed.

It is believed the man wanted to give her the virus, which leads to Aids, so she would have sex with him again, the New Zealand Sunday Star-Times reported.

According to the documents, the man twice pricked his wife with a sewing needle tainted with his blood.

The man has admitted infecting his wife and faces up to 14 years in jail.

The 35-year-old man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, has been remanded in custody and will be sentenced at Auckland High Court early next year.

According to the court documents obtained by the newspaper, the husband discovered he was HIV-positive during health checks when the family arrived in New Zealand in 2004.

His wife and children were not infected.

'Sting-like mark'

The wife said she wanted to stay with her husband for the sake of their children but refused to have sex with him for fear of contracting the disease.

But she said that in May last year she found "a sting-like mark" on her left thigh and two days later awoke to a stinging feeling in her leg.

She said she also saw her husband handling a syringe full of his blood.

Four months later during a routine check-up she was told she was HIV-positive.

She said she confronted her husband who admitted pricking her with an infected needle.

"All he said [was] he was sorry. He said, 'I used needles on you because I wanted you to be the same as me so that you can live with me and you won't leave me'," she said in a statement.

The husband was charged in October last year.

Care for environment or opportunity for Xmas shopping?

There is an outcry about the size of the Tanzanian delegation to the Climate change summit due to take place in Copenhagen, Denmark from 7-18 December 2009. The actual of delegates from Tanzania is unknown but it is estimated that almost 100 people will go there.

This is a suprise move for a country which there is very little concern for environment. The country is observing accelerated deforestations as in above picture, illegal mining and export of rare plant breed, planting and grazing near water sources, building of hotels and airstrips in natural reserves, industrial pollution of water sources, need I say more?

We have done very little to address some of the issues that I mentioned earlier. Save for the Masai pastoralists who are taking their case to the global platform after being evicted from their land, I do not think the size of the delegation reflects our concerns for the environment at all.

There could be other motives for this huge delegation, Christmas and New Year festive holidays are just around the corner. Of course, to some delegates, this an opportunity to do a major shopping for the family and "small houses". With daily perdiem ranging from USD 300-400, shopaholics could easily rake in shopping capital of between USD3000-4000 for ten days that they are in "holiday" in Copenhagen.

This is an opportunity to get some Christmas money who cares about the environment.

US ambassador visits Zanzibar

The newly appointed US Ambassador to Tanzania Alfonso Lenhardt yesterday paid a courtsey call at the State House in Zanzibar to present himself.
Mr Lenhardt praised the Government of Zanzibar for handling well the ongoing voters' registration exercise ahead of the next year's general elections. He also commended the Isles for its success in the fight against malaria (Picture: Zanzibar State House).

Shortly before traveling back to his country and speaking with reporters at Havana’s Jose Marti International Airport, the Tanzanian leader added that he was also very satisfied with his meeting with his Cuban counterpart Raul Castro.

He referred to the emotion he felt when he visited the ‘Sierra Maestra’ mountains in Santiago de Cuba province where, he commented, the guerrilla struggle against the last Cuban tyranny was born. He also highlighted his visit to the tomb of Cuban National Hero Jose Marti in the Santa Ifigenia cemetery and the Mausoleum of the 3rd ‘Mario Muñoz Monroy’ Eastern Front where Commander of the Revolution Juan Almeida was buried in Santiago de Cuba.

The rebel front was founded during the last stage of the struggle against the tyranny of Fulgencio Batista and it covered the surrounding areas of Jiguani up to Palma Soriano, to the South of San Luis, El Cobre, in Santiago de Cuba.

During his visit, Mrisho Kikwete, who arrived in Cuba last Monday, met with Raul Castro and toured places of social and historic interest.

He was seen off at the airport by Deputy Foreign Minister Marcos Rodriguez Costa.

Health care reform in the US

President Barack Obama is trying to push his health care reforms before the end of the year. All the Congress and the Senate have found points of convergence in certain areas, still there are people who are not convinced.
The new bill intends to increase coverage to medical aid to a greater majority population. Groups like Rethinkreform think this refrom will increase the premium and affect the seniors more.
When I saw this advert, Kinda like the way the used the word "crack" in reference to the health care bill.

Guantanamo, Dec. 2, (CMKS) .- Army General Raúl Castro Ruz, President of the Councils of State and Ministers, headed the official reception on Tuesday to Mr. Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, President of the United Republic of Tanzania.

Following the singing of the national anthems of both countries and the inspect of the Honor Guard, the leaders held official talks; also taking part was Esteban Lazo Hernandez, vice president of the State Council.

The exchange was in correspondence with the strong friendship forged by leaders of the stature of Fidel Castro and Julius Nyerere. The meeting reaffirmed the good level of bilateral ties and the desire to strengthen further. It discussed the challenges facing the two countries in their economic and social consequences of climate change and international issues.

Kikwete praised the cooperation with Cuba in education, health and other fields, and has underlined the decision to maintain support for the struggle against the blockade. Raúl ratified the will to continue cooperating with the African sister nation, which our people appreciate their unwavering solidarity.

Simultaneous to the conversation between the presidents, a working team of both delegations met, which addressed issues of common concern.

I know statistics are increasingly showing HIV infection among married couples is growing. However, I am not sure how true is the fact that 60% of men having sex with men also have affairs with women. To me, the proportion is much lower. I do not have the figures, but it is something worth looking into.

Apparently Tanzanian president Jakaya Kikwete and the Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni are visiting Cuba at the same. This information sheds some more as to why Cuban media mistook Kikwete for Museveni in a post I made yesterday.
While Museveni was received by the Cuban president Raul Castro, Kikwete was received by a deputy Foreign Minister. Click here to read more.

My Take: I know Cuba is a very good friends of Tanzania. I expected that the first official visit to Cuba by our head of state would have been given the status and respect it deserved. I find lumping of the visit of Tanzanian head of state with that of Uganda's Museveni a little perplexing. To make the matter even worse, our president was received by a junior minister, even the deputy president of Cuba was not available to receive our president. This situation raises more questions than answers. Why did Cuba invite two heads of state at the same time for state visits? Is President Kikwete's visit official or a private visit?

A prisoner gets a degree

Semayoga Ernest, a prisoner at the Ukonga Prison in Dar es Salaam, being awarded a bachelor degree in law today morning by the Chancellor of the Open University of Dar es Salaam (OUT), Dr Samuel Malecela. The special graduation ceremony was held at the prison (Source: Daily News).

My take: Prisons are supposed to corrective and not punitive. People like Semayoga should be made eligible for early release. Congratulation to Semayoga!

My Take: I found this picture on the net today I was searching for info about Kikwete's travel to Cuba. The caption of the picture refers to Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni as the Tanzanian president.
It seems with all the foreign trips made by our president over the years, some people still do not recognize him.

Majembe auction mart to do Sumatra's job

The Surface and Marine Transport Regulatory Authority (SUMATRA) has appointed Majembe Auction Mart to be its agent in dealing with transporters who violate traffic regulations and laws effective from yesterday.

According to the SUMATRA Director General Mr Israel Sekilasa Majembe will be responsible to ensure that all buses and dal dala which breach transportation conditions, including; carrying passengers without licences, forging licences and SUMATRA documents, charging higher fares, harassing students and minors, using abusive language against passengers, diverting routes are taken to task.

Majembe will hand out stiff penalties to culprits ranging from 100,000/- to 700,000/- depending on the nature of the traffic offence.

The questions that quickly come to mind include:

If SUMATRA has delegated this responsibility, what would SUMATRA be doing?
How will Majembe be supeervised? Majembe is best known for auctions, how prepared are they to partake this responsibility?
What legal mandate does Majembe have to enforce the fines?
How will the income be shared?

I would surely love to know.

Nimeiona mada iliyoandikwa na Rev. Kishoka kwenye Jamiiforum nikaona niweke hapa ili nawe upate kuiona. Nakumbuka miaka ya nyuma kuanzia nguo tulizovaa hadi vyakula tulivyokula vilikuwa "Made in Tanzania".
Sasa hivi tunatukuza sana mambo ya nje na hatuna mikakati dhabiti ya kuenzi na kuinua bidhaa zinatotengenezwa Tanzania. Mada hii ya Rev. Kishoka inatoa changamoto kubwa sana kwetu sote na hasa kwa viongozi wetu. Endelea kusoma:

Nawaza ni mwaka 2011 na nipo pale Ikulu, Rais Rev. Kishoka, natafakari cha kufanya ili kusisimua uzalishaji wa ndani na naita mkutano na Wafanyabiashara kupitia TCCIA, Wizara ya Biashara, Chama cha Wakulima TFA, Wizara ya kilimo, uvuvi na mifugo na watu wa TBS, Chakula Bora na Waziri Mkuu.

Tukiwa tunakunywa maji ya matunda ya Maaza na kufinyanga vipande vya nyama vilivyonunuliwa shoprite na mkusanyiko huo kuhudumiwa na Movenpick, nawauliza wote walioko,

Je itakuwa ni makosa kutoa amri na agizo kama hilo na kuwataka wanieleze wanataka nini kutoka kwangu ili mimi kama Rais wa Tanzania na Raia wa Tanzania waanze kujivunia matunda ya mazao yetu na si kufikiria mara mbili mbili tukienda Shoprite ambako asilimia 97% ya bidhaa ni kutoka nje ya nchi?

Hivi kutakuwa na ubaya gani ikiwa VOIL na Tanbond ikawa ndio chaguo la Mtanzania badala ya Blue Band na Korie?

Je ni dhambi kuona kuwa nyama na vyakula vinazalishwa Tanzania kwa ubora kama ule wa zile nyama za Farmers Choice kutoka kenya au zile nyama za Afrika Kusini?

Je ni dhambi kuona kuwa tunaanza kutengeneza samani nzuri kwa kutumia mafundi wetu na viwanda vyetu badala ya kuagiza kutoka Dubai?

Je nitakuwa nimekosea kutoa hamasisho kama hilo kwa Wafanyabiashara ili kuzindua upya shughuli za Uzalishaji mali wa nchi yetu kitu ambacho kitatoa ubora wa bidhaa zetu na zaidi kutoa ajira kwa Watanzania na kuachana na uagizaji wa bidhaa na vyakula ambavyo tuna uwezo mkubwa wa kuzalisha wenyewe na hivyo tuache kuomba mikopo au kutumia fedha zetu za kigeni kununulia vitu ambavyo tunavyo hapa hapa nchini?
