Kenya has just reported its first case of swine flu. The Public Health Minister Beth Mugo said today that a 20-year-old British student was diagnosed on Saturday with swine flu in the western Kenya town of Kisumu. The student had arrived in Kenya on June 21 from Britain and developed the infection two days later. His 33 colleagues have been quarantined in their hotel in Kisumu.
This infection is now in the backyard of our northern neighbors. We need to be on our guard so that we are not caught unaware. We need to enhance surveillance and put in place measures to detect cases and promptly managed effectively any possible cases.
